Tips, Task & Progress

Located at the first entrance to the World's first National Park, Gardiner, Montana is the perfect place to go as green as possible.

Government regulations will not solve all of our problems. In order to meet the challenges facing our planet, each person will need to develop more conservative habits and work to make his or her community more sustainable.

The Objectives of the "Greening Gardiner" campaign are:

* To improve residential energy efficiency through improvements in household insulation, lighting, and appliances. This will save everyone money. It also will reduce our reliance on technologies such as coal and petroleum, which generate pollution and are becoming more expensive.

*To increase Gardiner's reliance on non-polluting sources of energy such as solar and wind.

* To minimize solid waste in the community through an aggressive effort to reduce, reuse and recycle.

In addition to saving money and doing our bit to help the environment, the residents of Gardiner can set an example for the hundreds of thousands that travel through town every year to visit Yellowstone National Park. We can show the world that "going green" is not only do-able but makes good business sense!

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has just released a 572 page report entitled the "Global Environmental Outlook 4" or "GEO 4.… Continue

Prelim Results of Our Energy Survey

In August 2007, Bear Creek Council began a survey of electricity consumption in the Gardiner, Montana area. The objectives were: (1) to estimate total electricity demand for the greater Gardiner area, and (2) track changes in electricity use from year to year. The first objective will help Bear Creek Council set a realistic target for its Greening Gardiner Campaign, which has the long-term goal of generating all of Gardiner’s power with renewable technologies such as solar and wind. The second o… Continue

Schools across the U.S. go green

The folks at Grist report that "Sixty schools across the U.S. have been certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, and 360 more are waiting to have applications approved; in 2000, only four schools applied for certification."

"...according to USGBC's Rachel Gutter, green schools can increase test scores, retain teachers, and save districts up to $100,000 a year in energy, water, and health-care costs."

Is there a model here for Gardiner?… Continue
